We mourn the loss of Yehuda Gurvich

Concentration camp survivor Yehuda Gurvich has passed away.

As a child, Yehuda was a victim of the Nazi terror in Kaunas. During his imprisonment, he developed mutual cohesion and solidarity in a group with other children. He survived several concentration camps, including Dachau, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mauthausen and Gunskirchen.

He was liberated from the Gunskirchen concentration camp 80 years ago and carried the memories of this dark time in his heart for the rest of his life. His life was characterized by immeasurable suffering, but also by solidarity and the deep conviction that humanity knows no boundaries.

In 2020, on the 75th anniversary of liberation, Yehuda shared his experiences with other survivors as part of the MKÖ's virtual liberation ceremony. His words were a powerful appeal against forgetting and a testimony to the power of the human spirit.

Yehuda Gurvich leaves behind a legacy of remembrance and admonition. His life reminds us how important it is to preserve the lessons of history and to stand up for a world in which humanity and justice prevail over hatred and intolerance.
