Programme & Travel Information – Opening of the Gunskirchen Memorial Site
The new Gunskirchen Memorial Site will soon be officially inaugurated.
The Gunskirchen Memorial Site makes visible what remained largely unseen for decades: the history of one of the most brutal satellite camps within the Mauthausen concentration camp system, the traces that remain at the historic location, and the voices of its survivors. Six glass steles in the forest, QR codes, a virtual tour, survivor testimony videos, audio recordings by prominent speakers, and historical as well as contemporary materials combine on-site remembrance with worldwide digital education and outreach.
The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Gunskirchen Memorial Site.
The memorial site has been created as a new place of remembrance and learning, making visible the history of the Gunskirchen satellite camp and preserving the legacy of the survivors for future generations.
The programme will include contributions from
• Peter Haubner, Second President of the Austrian National Council
• Andreas Babler, Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister
• Avigdor Neumann, survivor of the Gunskirchen satellite camp
• Charlotte Herman, President of the Jewish Community of Linz
• Willi Mernyi, Chair of the Mauthausen Committee Austria
The ceremony will also feature musical contributions by Christoph Meier and the official opening act together with survivors of the Gunskirchen satellite camp.
Following the ceremony, participants will have the opportunity to explore the memorial site during a guided tour and learn more about its thematic stations.
